Phum Style

phum_style-1This show tells a modern tale. It is a simple story, but one that  uncovers the reality of Cambodia in  a process of radical transformation. New urban developments attract youths who are looking for a job, comfort, and modern life. When they come back to their hometown in the countryside, a gulf has  grown  between those who have copied modern images of the city, and those who stayed to cultivate the rice fields in a rural environment and remained true to their traditions.

phum_style-2Between confrontation and seduction, reunion and discovery, this show explores traditional aspects of Khmer society and its ever growing modernity through a rich and varied acrobatic work, with humor and poetry.

Eclipse

eclipse-1Eclipse is the result of a collaboration between the artists of Phare Ponleu Selpak, (musicians, circus performers & actors) and the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA). Our complementary artistic skills and experience has created a modern tale colored with Cambodian cultural references, supporting the fight against discrimination.

eclipse-2Set in a fictional, parochial  village, Eclipse focuses on the  narrow mindedness of the local population. The villagers discriminate against anyone who does not meet their standards. A strange-looking man lives in this isolated village and suffers because he is  different. He prays for divine intervention and the Gods respond by transforming him into a beautiful woman, who all the men in the village fall in love with. A plague begins to consume the villagers one by one  and they accuse the beautiful girl  of being the cause. They punish her by death...but the scourge remains and carries on...

Jours d'école

jours_ecole_2

The fourth generation of circus students has been split in 2 groups before Tini Tinou Festival 2009, in order to create 2 brand new shows choreographed by professional artists that also became teachers in PPS.

“Jours d’ecole”, understand “school days” is the result of the collaboration between Huoth Hieng, a young and talented circus teacher and performer, and Nay Sarosi, a Franco Cambodian choreographer who created in France his own company, "UBI”.
The 9 students from the fourth generation implicated, all from 16 to 20 years old, already had an experience of the stage for 2 seasons, performing the show "Ghosts".jours_ecole_3

More than a series of circus numbers linked together with humour and poetry, "Jours d’école" is a true theatre play happening in a school class in Cambodia. Entering a messy classroom, the students decide to clean it up in a happy atmosphere. But as the teacher takes more and more time to show up, the excitement grows and the tricks start to burst the stage… The characters of this small community will mock, love, squabble and help each other when eventually the late adult will appear and try to recover his authority.

Wicked Kids

wicked_kids_1Second show created with the 4th generation of circus students, “Wicked kids” involves 11 teenagers from 16 to 20 years old. It has been choreographed by Houn Bunthoeurn, a circus teacher and performer of PPS, and Vincent Buso, a French acrobat regularly volunteering in our association for empowerment of the teacher’s skills.

Displaying a great deal of disciplines (acrobatics, banquine, hoola hoops, contortion, juggling, bouncing balls, diabolo, dandle board, monocycle, lifts), the piece is very explosive and modern in its theatrical direction. The whole scenario plays around the danger of imaginary thieves hidden among the audience, which gets the naughty kids arguing on stage…wicked_kids_2

Deception, tenderness, competition, great fun, pressure of being “cool”, they will have to deal with numerous feelings just like Cambodian teenagers do nowadays.

The energy and vitality of our Cambodian students (circus and music) are the most important ingredients of the success of their work, associated with strong skills that always amaze visitors.

De 4 à 5

4a5-14a5-2Nine young artists, acrobats and musicians, present a contemporary art production colored with traditional Cambodian references.

These comic and mischievous show-offs hit the heights with poetry. In a mobile and fragile set, they invite you to share a special moment of their daily lives.

From human relationships to child's play, from Khmer musicals to samba rhythms, let yourself be entertained and moved for one hour of laughter and tears.

Holiday

holiday-1Inspired by the daily life of can pickers, the artists of this show the Bang Touich Ban Thom depict life on the street with humor, poetry, and energy!

The weather is hot, and the work is boring…. So our Bang Touich Ban Thom have decided to take a little vacation! But when you are a street kid, you have nothing you can play with…It is not an issue for our marginalized band, thanks to their great imagination they turn the street into a playground, tease the street sellers, and use plates as drums.

holiday-2Holiday lets the small can pickers show their nonconformism, and disrespect to their fellow men…They will trip their friends up, slap them, and make them jump over a rope, they would do anything to show you their acrobatics skills.

Watch out the Ban Touich Bang Thom are coming!
