As PPS grew, a natural division occurred within the circus with some members preferring a more physical approach, while others displayed an aptitude for theatre and the performing arts. This resulted in the two groups we see today, one focusing on tricks and the other on educational circus, which centers on exploring social issues. The educational circus developed a more theatrical focus, and became the Awareness Theatre Group in 2000.
The aim of the Awareness Theatre Group is to highlight common social issues such as HIV/AIDS, drug abuse and domestic violence, and to improve the daily lives of the actors taking part. Not only do the artists receive theatrical training from both Khmer and foreign teachers, they also develop a practical knowledge of social issues and combine the two in their performances. This is particularly pertinent as the artists all come from difficult family backgrounds. Through a structured program of training, rehearsing and performance, participants are involved in a disciplined environment, which in turn improves their self-esteem.
Theatre is an important mode of communication because it is not reliant on understanding a written text. Limited education levels in rural areas mean that written materials are not the best way to transmit information, especially on social issues. By using theatre as an interactive and participatory mode we can stimulate reflection and thought on a particular subject matter. Additionally, theatre also fosters discussions and debate as it takes place at a social venue, enjoyed by families and groups. PPS uses theatre as a way to address social issues, but in an entertaining and memorable way. The very fact that the participating actors have experienced the scenes we see played out before us results in a more balanced viewpoint within a non - judgmental environment. For the actors themselves the theatre is a point of reflection, highlighting the paths which have carried them to their present circumstances and illuminates the possibility of choices, all of which have all consequences.
PPS uses the arts to address social issues in partnership with other organizations for the benefit of whole communities, disseminating social education from an accessible and compelling platform.
